Descripción

Recién he visitado la ciudad Sønderborg en el sur de Dinemarca donde Frank Gehry está desarollando un gran proyecto urbano para transformar el puerto y la Waterfront. Hicé un poco de investigación sobre el proyecto.

The Sønderborg Harbor Masterplan proposes to transform the former industrial waterfront into a vibrant urban development by creating a sense of density and activity, focused around an Urban Square. The development extends along the waterfront and incorporates landscape parks, mixed-use areas, residential and office buildings, a hotel, recreation facilities, and cultural buildings.

The focal point of the revitalized urban waterfront is the four buildings at the corners of the Urban Square. The Kunsthalle and Cinema are located on the city side of the Urban Square to carry the activity that connects the Urban Square with the historic city. The Hotel and the office building are located at the water side of the Urban Square to mediate between the smaller-scale historic buildings of Sonderborg and the larger-scale hospital and university complexes.

By concentrating the new development around the Urban Square, it allows for a lower-density distribution of the office and residential buildings. This approach maximizes open space for culture and recreation and allows the continuation of the existing landscape as an Urban Park along the waterfront.

The development is unified by a series of unique landscape spaces, creating a series of Urban Parks. These parks are linked by the Harborfront Promenade which extends the north end as a pedestrian bridge, completing the waterfront promenade and connecting both sides of the harbor.

One of the planned buildings will be realized by the Bjarke Ingels Group. I found a statement about their design for Sonderborg.

[…] BIG’s project, Sønderborg, is a new 1,100 m2 residential building located on the northern side of the harbourfront close to the existing Sønderjylland Hospital.

From the water the building is viewed as a sculpture that rest on a soft hill and invites the viewer to explore the different angles of the architecture. From the other side the building is views as a series of volumes that twists and rises from the park creating an open but yet protected arrival space.

The building consists of 7 exclusive apartments with private terraces that extend the life inside the building to the outside in the warmer months. The terraces have a covered and uncovered area so they can be used even during rainy days.

To archive a better connection between the park where the building is placed, we have lowered the basement half below ground while the other half of the basements is covered by a soft hill. This means that you need to descent half a floor in order to get inside the apartments. This gesture means that the two lower terraces archive more privacy than if they were placed directly on the existing terrain.

I think it's a really ambitious project to change a total quarter in a city all in one. But of course like this the waterfront will get a very homogenous apparence. I am really excited to visit Sonderborg at some point when the transformation is further advanced.
